Jealous of Friends Traveling

jealousMy friend Kelly just informed me that she and her husband are going to Japan for Christmas this year. They’ve booked a stay at a hotel that has a private hot springs off of their room. From this hotel they are going to be able to hike to see snow monkeys.

My friend Rafael has taken three trips this year so far - to Arizona, Nevada and Washington. I was supposed to go on one of those trips with him but then I ended up having to have surgery and couldn’t go after all. He described it to me after the fact and I definitely feel like I missed out.

I guess I’m feeling jealous about all of the traveling that my friends are doing right now. It seems like everyone else gets to go on trips except for me. My boyfriend and I have been kicking around some Canada vacation ideas. We’d both like to ski Canadian Rockies. But the reality is that he’s living on a student’s income and I’m trying to catch up with these medical bills so neither of us can afford to take that trip right now.

I know that my time will come. I’ve traveled in the past and I’ll get to travel again sometime in the future. I’m just feeling a little envious of everyone I know who is getting the chance to travel right now.

Restaurants that Benefit from Culinary Tourism

culinary-tourismThere is a trend in travel that appeals to only a certain group of people. It’s the trend called culinary tourism. This refers to people who make it a point to travel to places where they can enjoy certain food or restaurants. The restaurants that benefit from this trend don’t have to be located in specific places. They don’t have to be certain types of restaurants. They don’t have to be staffed with the top graduates from the most elite cooking schools. They simply have to be willing to market themselves towards the group of people who are making this trend so popular.

Doing this requires finding a way to make your restaurant stand out from the other restaurants in your area. You also want to stand out from similar restaurants in other areas. If you have a unique culinary education then make sure that your customers know that. If you offer a rare regional dish then promote it in all of your marketing. And then seal the deal by making sure that the customers who come to enjoy your food are treated to a better-than-average dining experience. That’s really all it takes to benefit from the culinary tourism trend.

Health Insurance for Elderly People with Asthma

asthmaI have struggled with asthma my entire life. I have used albuterol inhalers, steroid pills and steroid inhalers to try to get this problem under control. I finally found an inhaler that works for me. The bad news is that it isn’t covered by my health insurance and the price of the inhaler is way out of my budget.

This makes me wonder what elderly people do when they’re dealing with asthma. As they get weaker, the asthma gets worse. If it’s not under control, it could be a really serious problem. I can’t imagine that they can afford to pay for the inhalers if I can’t since they’re retired when I’m working.

On second thought, though, maybe their health insurance is better than mine. I’ve heard that individual health insurance in Florida is good. Since there’s a high elderly population there, it would make sense to think that this is a really good place to look at when considering health insurance issues for the elderly. I’ve also heard the Medicare supplements in Florida are good so maybe that would cover inhalers that aren’t covered by insurance.

I’m curious about this issue. It’s something I’ll need to look into more!

Dropping Off Resumes

I will be the first to say that I have never been very excited about job hunting.  My biggest problem with it would be the amount of time that you need to invest, and the amount of rejection that you sometimes face.  No one wants to be rejected, so for me, job hunting is not a fun pastime.

I was recently laid off from my job as a cameraman at a television station in town, so I have found myself having to look for a job again.  There is nothing more depressing than dropping off resume after resume and not getting any feedback as to whether they would consider you for the position or not.  In some respects, these past few weeks have been the most depressing of my life.

But I was a little excited today when I was looking in the classifieds section of the newspaper today.  It seems that a local film company, Actuality Films is looking for a film and video cameraman.  Since my working background is in television, I feel that I have a good shot at getting the job.

So, I am going to catch the bus in about half an hour and drop off my resume.  It won’t hurt to try, right?
