Web-Related Christmas Gifts

A big group of us got together late last night to open our Christmas presents together. We always do this on Christmas Eve right around midnight. We had a great time. This morning I woke up thinking about the fact that so many of us ended up getting computer-related or web-related presents this year.

Some of these presents make perfect sense. A friend of mine works for a Tampa internet marketing company doing Tampa SEO and blog content writing. It completely makes sense that she received a lot of books and software related to blogging and SEO work. After all, this is what she does.

However a lot of us actually got web-related presents even if we don’t do work that has a lot to do with being on the Internet. Someone got a copy of Peep Diaries, a book about today’s Peep Culture which has a lot to do with the culture of the Internet. Someone else got a new wireless keyboard and mouse for home computing and gaming. Even the homemade presents were computer-related this year; one aunt made knitted cozies for everyone’s computer monitors!

Did you get any presents this year that were related to computers or Internet work? Did these gifts make sense in the context of your work or daily life? Is this something that is becoming a bigger and bigger trend? I’m curious! Merry Christmas!

Best Scented Candles for Christmas

p_100482136

Are you having people over to your house for Christmas? If so then you should consider getting scented candles to add to the feeling of the season in your home.

Some of the best scents for a Christmas scented candle are:

  • Gingerbread. Get a gingerbread scented candle and your home will smell as if you have spent all holiday season baking away.
  • Pine. This is a traditional Christmas scent that normally comes from the Christmas tree. If your tree isn’t pungent enough (or you got a fake tree this year) then a pine scented candle is a great idea.
  • Cinnamon. These are great scented candles all year long and they’re particularly wonderful at Christmastime.
  • Candy cane. One of the most popular scents for Christmas candles is the scent of candy canes. This peppermint smell really makes your home feel sweet.
  • Butter rum. This scent and other rich scents like it are great at this time of year. Any scented candle that makes you feel warm inside when you smell is going to be good throughout the whole winter.
  • Spiced apple. I’m not sure how this scent came to be associated with Christmas but it’s definitely one that people like to burn in their homes at this time of year.

Review of Dead Calm

Tonight I saw the movie Dead Calm for the first time.  My husband, who had seen it before, watched it with me.

I thought it was a really interesting movie because of how much the female lead, Nicole Kidman, kicked butt.  She was left alone on the boat with the killer for a long period of time, and not only kicked his butt but also returned to save her husband.

I was really amazed how knowledgeable she was about the boat, but I guess being the wife of a Navy captain would do that.  She had a pretty good knowledge of marine supplies and was able to shoot a harpoon, inflate a raft, and even set up the sails and sail the boat herself.

Her husband, who is left on the sinking ship all by himself, also was pretty cool — but that was to be expected, since he was  in the Navy and all.  He obviously knew all about boat engine parts, and was able to get the boat’s engine going again.  For a while it really seemed like he was going to save the day, but then the ship started leaking again, and he just had to wait for his wife to come and find him.

Like I said, I loved Nicole Kidman’s character in the movie, as she was really quite tough.  I didn’t like the ending though.  You’ll see what I mean if you watch the movie…  But it seemed a bit contrived and rather unnecessary, like they just wanted to squeeze in one final near-death scene.  It would have been a much stronger movie if it had had a better ending!

Looking for An Easy Shuffleboard Game

Is anyone out there familiar with shuffleboard game rules?  I know just  little bit about it, and I can look on the internet, of course, but it’s so much easier if someone can just briefly explain them to me.  I’d invite you to come over and even demonstrate, but of course, that would be just a little bit too weird.

I’m also interested in maybe an abbreviated version of the games.  I teach special ed in a high school, and I think that shuffleboard might be a neat addition to our game room there.  The kids love to play games and to work together; in addition, it would give them an opportunity to move around a little in their otherwise pretty sedentary lives.  My kids are mainly cognitively and emotionally impaired.  The physically disabled, though, I think could somehow make this work.

Is there anyone out there who has tried out this game in their special ed department?  I’m also curious to find out if anyone has even tried it out in kind of an intramural venue within the population of regular ed high school students.  Please give me any advice you can think of for implementing this game at my school.
