Why Great Danes Are Good Apartment Dogs

Most people who live in apartments think that they have to get a little dog if they’re going to own a dog. While there are some valid reasons for this, it is not entirely true. In fact, one of the best apartment dogs is a big dog - The Great Dane.
The thing that most people don’t realize is that little dogs typically have a lot more energy than big dogs do. A big dog can stay in the apartment and sleep most of the day. It can be taken outside for a couple of walks and that satisfies its need for exercise. A little dog needs to be taken out much more frequently to get rid of the day’s pent-up energy.
The Great Dane is a particularly good dog to keep indoors because of its temperament. It’s a friendly dog that really loves to spend its time with people. It doesn’t want to be left sitting out in the cold yard. It wants to be indoors. Since it gets along well with people, it does fine inside at all times. The only thing is that you have to make sure that you pick up your clutter and keep enough space free for this dog since it really is a big one!

But how do they tolerate being alone all day? You say they like to be with people, but a working owner usually likes a small dog for an apartment because then they can keep them crated all day.

That’s very interesting. I thought the opposite–and I thought they were on the “short list” of dogs that could unleash primitive reactions at any moment, like Rotts and Dobies.

This is also true of Greyhounds. People think they need to be allowed to run all the time, but I found out at a Greyhound rescue place that it’s just the opposite.

Yes, I’ve heard that Greyhounds are overlooked as excellent pets. You’ve just got to make sure that they are kept warm. They have absolutely NO insulation.

Boy that old Disney movie sure showed the opposite. I don’t remember what it was called, but it was the one where the dad snuck in a Dane puppy among the Dachsund litter he was supposed to bring home to his wife. The Dane was nothing but trouble!

Hello All, I’ve been a dane owner and trainer for 10 years and let me just be on the record saying that danes, while loving and compassionate are only right for certain people. People that are alright with drooling for starters. It’s a favorite pastime for mine to go get a big drink of water and lay her head on my lap… Another thing, Danes (like Rottweilers or Dobermans) ARE NOT “short leash” they are products of their environments. FINALLY- Danes may not need as much exercise as a Golden or a Setter, but they DO need room. These are Large dogs that must be able to stretch out and romp. Consider how large their strides are, without sufficient energy outlets these dogs can be a lot to handle.

I actually own a great dane and have lived in 7 homes since I have had him. from a 400sq foot studio to a 2000sq foot home with a fenced yard.
His favorite has been the studio. He can see me at all times, and doesnt have to get up to move from room to room. Also he never likes me out of his sight, so he will not stay in our large back yard with out me out there with him.
An apartment is the best place for us. We do go on frequent hikes and walks.
hope this helps.
