I never participated in organized sports when I was a kid. I had a medical condition that prevented it. As a child, I loved getting out of P.E. However, I now wish that I’d found a way to do at least some sports as a child. I think that sports teach you things that it’s hard to learn from other places.

The main thing that kids learn from sports is how to be a part of a team. This is a really important life skill that clearly benefits you in so many ways. I’ve never really been a team member. I tend to work alone. I often even play alone. I think this is due directly to the fact that I never experienced the give-and-take of being a single member on a sports team.

Sports can teach you other things too. If you’re a team captain then you learn about selecting team members and managing teams. If you’re in charge of your team’s schedule then you learn about time management and communication with your team members. Each role on a team teaches you something new. Since I never held any team roles at all there were a lot of things I had to learn the hard way. Learning them while playing sports would’ve been a lot more fun!

The benefit of being a team captain is that you have the ability to pass on your knowledge of a certain sport to those around you. On the other hand it can be a big responsibility as well. There is a lot of organizing which must be done and in some cases a season can go on for several months. During the high months of the season you can be scheduling games and practices for practically 6 days a week and this can be too much for one person to organize.

With this being said a great way to make your captain responsibilities easier is to take under your wing one of the many league software products on the market today. These can either be a web based or downloadable software application that has been created to help you organize your game schedules and send out these same schedules to the members of your team right from your computer. Everything else in the world has become computerized and now this includes your team captain jobs as well. These software applications are very affordable and can make your job 100 times easier and therefore more enjoyable as well! When you have more time to stop worrying and start having fun you will wish you would have found this solution years ago.

Sometimes I wonder if we have a bowling team that drinks or if we have a drinking team that bowls! I’m sure it is the same in many other adult leagues, but really, when most people think of bowling leagues they think of beer bellies.

One of the things that I like to do as team captain is buy a round of Jaeger bombs for the guys on my team every time we win a match. That’s right, as captain I don’t view my position as one where I have to know how to coach these guys. A Jaeger bomb is a shot which you then drop into a beer glass which is about halfway full of Red Bull energy drink. Then, of course, you chug it. Let’s just say that it seems to do the trick!  And it’s cheap because we rarely win.

Maybe that is part of why we have gotten the reputation of being the “party team.” Or maybe it’s the fact that our team name is “Here for the beer.” Who knows? This one thing is for sure though: our team is full, and I regularly have people ask me if they can be on my team! It’s totally cool being the popular team. Now if we could just win every once in awhile, that’d be even better!
